Plant a Seed, Read! Summer 2026
This event is part of our 2026 summer reading program, Plant a Seed, Read, and is made possible by the support of the Friends of the Athol Public Library and/or the Athol Cultural Council
Let's plant some seeds of wonder on an interactive "road trip" across the United States as we learn about some favorite plants and animals. We'll travel west to east and decide where to go!
Brad Timm is a wildlife ecologist, author, and founder of the Northeast Wildlife Team, an organization dedicated to helping people better understand—and connect with and help—the natural world around them. He is the author of America is Wild!, an illustrated state-by-state encyclopedia of nearly 200 animals and 200 plants of the United States, and of the Wildlife Out Your Window regional wildlife book series, which invites readers to discover the hidden lives of the wildlife they see every day, turning backyards, neighborhoods, and local landscapes into places of wonder.
Brad holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and has published extensively in scientific journals. These days he splits his time between writing upcoming wildlife books and leading engaging wildlife programs and presentations for a wide range of audiences. When he’s not working, Brad can usually be found hiking local trails, saltwater fishing, or spending time outdoors with friends and loved ones.
Brad will bring both his books, America is Wild and Wildlife Out Your Window to sell and inscribe.
About America is Wild: The definitive, illustrated guide to the wildlife and plants of North America featuring nearly 200 animals and 200 plants found in the U.S. Full of fascinating facts about each animal and plant, all brought to life with hundreds of gorgeous illustrations throughout!
About Wildlife Out Your Window: You’ll never look at the animals around you the same way again with this book. Did you know Blue Jay feathers aren’t actually blue? That chipmunks can stash over a gallon of food underground for winter? Or that male Painted Turtles perform a dance to win a mate? This book is packed with eye-opening facts like these—revealing the hidden lives of some of the most common birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians in New England.
Featuring 100 of the region’s most common animals, each with its own page of fascinating, easy-to-read facts, this book is perfect for curious minds of all ages. Bonus sections include simple ways to help local wildlife, monthly sighting checklists, fun wildlife-related activities, and more.
This presentation will be a 40-minute interactive slide show with time for Q & A and is suitable for adults and families with children ages 8 and up.
Registration is required.
