Program Description

Event Details

Please note this event will take place at the Alan E. Rich Park, 10 Main Street, Athol.

Enjoy a morning outside together learning about nature journaling and sit spots. We'll make a simple sketchbook and do a sit spot practice.

What is a sit spot?
A sit spot is a place in nature that you visit to use your senses and observe plants, birds, trees, bugs, sounds, and smells.

You can choose a sit spot to return to again and again, or try sitting in different spots to see what differences you observe. It's all about enjoying nature and your senses.

You can choose what to write or sketch in your journal - There are no rules!

This program is for everyone ages 6 and up! Kids ages 6 - 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

The library will supply three to six pages of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and one piece of card stock per person.
Deborah will provide pencils, color pencils, hole punches, sticks, rubber bands and ribbons.

Participants should bring a mat to sit on if they would like, wear clothes appropriate for the weather so they are comfortable outside and bring an open mind ready to try something new!

Free and open to the public.
Registration is required.

About the workshop leader:

Deborah Bazer has enjoyed teaching art classes for children and adults for over 25 years, in her home studio, as well as at Guild Studio School,  Amherst Community Arts Center, Artspace, and the Kids Art Nature summer camp. She holds a B.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a M.Ed from Antioch New England University in early childhood and elementary education. When she is not making art or telling stories with kids, she can be found in the woods or by the ocean, collecting materials to bring back to the studio. In her studio, she builds sculpture, carves raised relief tiles out of clay, as well as draws and paints.
